The Silent Killer

15 September 2009

High blood pressure is especially dangerous because it often has no warning signs or symptoms and therefor has been labeled "the silent killer." It can lead to any one or more of several potentially fatal complications, such as kidney problems, heart attack or a stroke.

Your blood pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the walls of your arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. The pressure is determined by the force and amount of blood pumped, and the size and flexibility of the arteries.

Your arteries are pipes that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. High blood pressure (hypertension) occurs when your blood moves through your arteries at a higher pressure than normal.

Over time high blood pressure can damage blood vessel walls causing scarring that promotes the build-up of fatty plaque, which can narrow and eventually block arteries. It also strains the heart and eventually weakens it. Very high blood pressure can cause blood vessels in the brain to burst resulting in a stroke

Many Pharmacies now have free Blood Pressure Monitors that enables you to take your own blead pressure. At that price, I would advise to try it atleast twice a year.
